All Is Well
This was taken on June 24 at 10:27 PM. Just a few days past the summer solstice, when Alaska stays light nearly around the clock. The sunsets stretch on. The light turns gold and holds. I had another hour of shooting left before heading back to camp. A few hours of rest, then up again about an hour before sunrise. Days in the field run long. But moments like this make it worth it, when the light hits just right.
After a full day behind the camera, an old tune from my scouting days always comes back to me. The unofficial words sung to "Taps":
Day is done, Gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hill,
From the sky.
All is well, Safely rest,
God is nigh.
