Meet Frank. This coastal brown bear earned his nickname honestly: he's enormous. Halfway up the glacier sits roughly 6 miles back, and the mountain peaks beyond are approximately another 7 miles further. That kind of scale is hard to grasp in a photo. You really have to stand there to feel it. In this location, bears spend much of the summer grazing in the tidal sedge meadows here, feeding on the protein-rich grasses before salmon runs pick up. It's one of the reasons the bay draws such a concentration of big bears like Frank.
